SAVO DREZGIĆ: JOINING MEGA WAS THE BEST POSSIBLE MOVE I COULD HAVE MADE

At just 16 years old, Savo Drezgić made his senior basketball debut playing for Partizan in the Radivoj Korać Cup. However, he truly broke out in 2025 wearing the Mega Superbet jersey, where he emerged as one of the best young players in the country. After spending a year at the University of Georgia, the talented point guard decided to return to Serbia.

“I firmly believe that joining Mega was the best possible move I could have made. It has already been proven that Mega is one of the best clubs in the world when it comes to developing young players. Every year the club produces new talented players, so the decision really wasn’t difficult. I couldn’t have made a better move.”

Drezgić arrived at Mega at the end of last season and debuted for the team in the Serbian SuperLeague playoff games against FMP. He does not hide that he needed some time to adjust.

“Considering that I didn’t play much in the United States, I needed a few games to adapt and get used to the system here. What helped me was that I already knew many of the players, which made the adaptation process much easier. I quickly found my rhythm and everything fell into place.”

Following in the footsteps of his older brother, he started playing basketball at the age of five.

“My older brother started playing before me, and because I wanted to compete with him, I started too. I took my first steps at Partizan’s basketball school, and I remember that I played basketball all day long – outside with friends and in the room with my brother. We spent all day shooting at a little hoop in our room. Luckily, we didn’t have neighbors living below us, so the noise didn’t bother anyone.”

When asked what sets Mega’s development approach apart from what he experienced before, Drezgić says:

“It’s definitely the individual work with young players and the focus on small details. That’s extremely important at my age when transitioning to serious basketball. It’s crucial to pay attention to those details in offense, defense, and technique. Also, at Mega we train twice a day, while in other clubs training is usually once per day. Bigger European clubs chase results and don’t devote as much time to working with young players, while Mega is fully committed to that. That’s what makes it stand out.”

He proved from the start of the season that he would be one of the team’s leaders. His standout performance came in the second round against Bosna, when he led his team to a convincing win with 24 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals, posting a performance index rating of 31. The brilliant display earned him the MVP award for the second round of the ABA League.

“I’m glad I received such recognition. However, what’s much more important is that we keep winning and improving from game to game; the awards will always come if we win and if the team energy is good. That way the whole team plays better, but of course, such awards are great for confidence.”

His strong performances didn’t go unnoticed, and along with Bogoljub Marković and Asim Đulović, his teammates from Mega, Savo Drezgić was named to the extended roster of the Serbian senior national team for the November FIBA window and the games against Switzerland and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“The feeling is amazing – definitely every child’s dream. This is just the beginning, and I’m sure I’ll be part of the national team in the future if I continue to train and work hard.”

Mega is competing on two fronts this season. In addition to the Adriatic League, the club is also participating in the Winline Basket Cup, a branch of the VTB League. After two games played, Vule Avdalović’s team has two wins — against CSKA Moscow and Lokomotiv Kuban. Drezgić emphasizes that such games can have a positive impact on young players in the future.

“First of all, I think this league is extremely interesting, especially playing against such big clubs like CSKA and Lokomotiv. And when you beat them, it’s truly incredible. Honestly, I didn’t expect us to start the league this well. But it’s a huge thing for us and for our confidence, and with it we’ve shown that we can play against anyone. Even though this is a young team, I think age is just a number. Being the youngest again has its advantages and disadvantages. We’re the team that runs the most, is the loudest, and has the most energy,” Drezgić concluded.
